Down Syndrome Awareness
What is Down Syndrome?
Down syndrome, also called Trisomy 21, is a genetic condition where a person is born with an extra copy of chromosome 21. This extra chromosome affects a person’s development, learning, and physical traits, but every person with Down syndrome is unique.
What’s it like to have Down Syndrome?
People with Down syndrome have a wide range of abilities. Like everyone, they have:
- Their own personalities
- Things they love and dislike
- Qualities that make them who they are
At Stand Out Socks, we believe that people with Down syndrome have the inherent right to be accepted, included, and valued as equal members of society.
World Down Syndrome Day
World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD) is celebrated every year on 21 March. Recognized by the United Nations since 2012, this day raises awareness and celebrates the lives, achievements, and potential of people with Down syndrome.
The date, 21/3, was chosen to highlight the triplication of the 21st chromosome that causes Down syndrome.
Why Wear Stand Out Socks for World Down Syndrome Day?
